Letterkenny Tidy Town Committee after winning their historic award at The Helix in Dublin yesterday
Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr Ciaran Brogan has congratulated Letterkenny being named best of the 862 towns and villages throughout the country that entered this year’s SuperValu National Tidy Towns competition.
Letterkenny was also declared as Ireland's Tidiest Large Urban Centre.
The announcement, which was made yesterday by Mr. Alan Kelly, TD., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government at an awards ceremony at the Helix in Dublin, was the eighth time a town in Donegal has won the overall prize, but the first time for Letterkenny.
Cllr. Brogan said “this success is testament to all the hard work, dedication and commitment of the people of Letterkenny. As a Letterkenny man myself I am well aware of the trojan work that is done day in day out by volunteers throughout the town and I am delighted that Letterkenny has received this wonderful accolade”.

He added “Letterkenny has entered the competition every year since 1959 and their deserved win is testament to having consistently achieved high standards in the competition at local and regional level. Letterkenny Tidy Towns committee has embraced all aspects of the SuperValu TidyTowns Competition, has built strong community links and has grown each year in the competition”.
The Cathaoirleach also acknowledged the achievements of the other towns and villages in this years competition with Glenties and Buncrana also achieving gold medal awards, Malin, Carraig Airt and Raphoe achieving silver medal awards and Ballyshannon receiving an endeavour award.
“It is clear that working together and getting things done increases peoples’ pride in where they live and helps to build vibrant communities. This is why I am delighted to see these towns and villages being recognised in this prestigious competition. Our outstanding achievements in this competition and the success of things like the Wild Atlantic Way this year, can only enhance our image in the eyes of visitors to this county and country,” he said.
The Tidy Towns competition is organised by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government and sponsored by SuperValu. The Tidy Towns competition has been sponsored by SuperValu since 1992.
